Overview

The content of this module will take a physiological approach to sport and exercise nutrition with a focus on the metabolic, and occasionally molecular, outcomes of modern approaches to sport nutrition. Topics covered may include gut health and exercsie performance, the molecular basis of carbohydrate restriction, the brain and nutrition, ketogenic diets, and the metabolic basis of ergogenic aids.

Topics covered may include gut health and exercsie performance, the molecular basis of carbohydrate restriction, the brain and nutrition, ketogenic diets, and the metabolic basis of ergogenic aids.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Pass: Students will possess an adequate understanding of the way that physiological principles link to contemporary topics in sport nutrition, but critical thought wil be largely lacking. They will be able to use this to solve specific case study problems but to a very limited degree, some ability to make this understandable to different populations will be evident.. Some of the content will be logically driven but there will also be frequent elements that are incorrect and/or lack some depth. Writing will be mostly descriptive and may frequently lack scientific support. Writing may not be as concise as required to effectively convey meaning. Correct citation style may be occasionally lacking and content may rely largely on lecture material with some use of additional module reading material.

-good -Merit: Students will possess a good - very good understanding of the way that physiological principles link to contemporary topics in sport nutrition, with some critical thought evident. They will be able to use this to solve specific case study problems and to communicate information in a way that is mostly understandable to different populations. Most of the content will be logically driven but will be incorrect or lack some depth in one or two instances. Writing will be mostly concise, scientifically supported, and critically based, though not always. Correct citation style will be mostly used and independent reading and interpretation will be evident, but with some reliance on lecture material and module reading.

-excellent -Distinction: Students will possess an excellent critical understanding of the way that physiological principles link to contemporary topics in sport nutrition. They will be able to use this critical understanding to solve specific case study problems and to communicate information in a way that is understandable to different populations. Writing will be concise, scientifically supported, and critically based, throghout. Correct citation style will be used and substantial independent reading and interpretation will be evident.

• On successful completion of this module student will be able to critically evaluate the physiological role of specific nutritional topics in sport and exercise science

• On successful completion of this module students will be able to apply current nutritional considerations in sport and execise physiology to situations that address specific individual needs.

• On successful completion of this module students will be able to take complex nutritional information and communicate it in a way that is understandable to specific non-scientific populations
