ΒιΆΉΝψ Venom Day attracts world-leading experts
Delegates at the recent successful Venom Day Toxin enthusiasts from around the globe gathered in North Wales for an annual event organised by ΒιΆΉΝψ students.
Leading academics, world experts and a TV star joined over a hundred people for the unique Venom Day conference in ΒιΆΉΝψ to discuss toxicology and venomous species.
Organised by students from the universityβs Herpetological Society, and supported by the British Herpetological Society (BHS) and the University of Wolverhampton, the event was celebrating its ninth year of running after being founded by former ΒιΆΉΝψ student, Dr Simon Maddock.
Speakers from around the world at this yearβs meeting included World Health Organisation representative and Global Snakebite Initiative director, Dr David Williams, and Natural History Museum researcher, Dr Ronald Jenner.
ΒιΆΉΝψ lecturers, Dr Wolfgang WΓΌster and Dr John Mulley of the School of Natural Sciences also spoke at the conference.
Throughout the conference there was a poster session promoting ongoing research, a series of stalls and a signing of the renowned herpetologist and TV personality, Mark OβSheaβs new book βSnakes of the Worldβ.
Rhiannon Williams, chair of ΒιΆΉΝψβs , said: βItβs amazing that so many people come to Venom Day every year.
βAlongside all the experts and speakers, we have lots of students and members of the general public from across the country β all meeting-up and discussing their passion for toxic taxa; from slow loris and centipedes, to snakes.β
Dr John Mulley, a lecturer at ΒιΆΉΝψ, said:
βΒιΆΉΝψ is a leading centre for teaching and research in herpetology, particularly venom and toxins β in fact weβre the only university in the UK to offer a degree in Zoology with Herpetology.β
βSome of the topics covered in the yearβs Venom Day included the use of frog-skin toxins in treating diseases and the problems in preventing and treating snakebites in the tropics.β
βThis type of event gives us a chance to highlight the work being done in ΒιΆΉΝψ and demonstrates just how proactive and keen our students are,β Dr Mulley added.
A raffle on the day in aid of the Global Snakebite Initiative raised Β£350.
ΒιΆΉΝψ is the only university in the UK, which offers a degree in Zoology with Herpetology.
