Prizewinning student lands forestry job before graduating
Felix GregoryProviding a good impression whilst on a professional placement led to a full-time job for a ΒιΆΉΝψ student before graduating.
Not only will Felix Gregory, 22, from Liskeard, Cornwall graduate with a first class BSc degree in Forestry, he will also receive a Royal Forestry Society bursary for completing the best undergraduate forestry dissertation.
Between his second and third year, Felix, a former Devonport High School for Boys, went on a professional placement at at their Brecon office. The company specialises in woodland management covering 50,000 acres from Buckinghamshire to Cornwall, and Wales and the Marches. The company manages properties which are remarkably diverse, ranging from tiny Sites of Special Scientific Interest to extensive plantations, and from small farm woodlands to whole estates.
Many of the at Pryor & Rickett Silviculture are ΒιΆΉΝψ Alumni, including the Managing Director, Graham Taylor MBE, who graduated with a forestry degree in 1990.
Mr Taylor said: βMy own sandwich year with the Forestry Commission really helped to embed the knowledge learned at ΒιΆΉΝψ and apply it to real life forest management conditions. We were highly impressed with Felixβs attitude, and aptitude, and he had clearly benefited from 2 good yearsβ high-quality forestry teaching at ΒιΆΉΝψ before starting on his sandwich year placement. The solid year that he put in gave us confidence in him and his future as a forest manager with Pryor & Rickett Silviculture.β
Coming from a rural background, Felix has always wanted to work in the environmental sector and to contribute to the good management and guardianship of natural resources, so heβs βdelighted to be able to do thisβ.
Felix said: βThe professional placement year was exciting and immensely valuable, and it enabled me to put what Iβd learnt in lectures into practice and build on my skills in a professional environment. I made some great contacts and Iβm extremely grateful that I was offered a job with the host company at the end of the placement.
βI thoroughly enjoyed my time at ΒιΆΉΝψ and getting to know north Wales and all the adventures it offers, whilst working with other students and lecturers who are so passionate about the subject. Itβs a great feeling to be graduating and Iβm looking forward to moving on, and to carry all that I have learnt from my time at ΒιΆΉΝψ.β
