School EXPO event showcasing students work, and engaging with companies

Wednesday 11th March 2020 was an important day in the calendar of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering: it was the School’s Final Year Project & Careers Expo. Hundreds of students attended the event, with third-year students presenting their project work as individual posters. As with previous years, several local companies attended, promoting their business, projects and vacancies that the third-year students may want to consider.

Dr Panagiotis Ritsos, one of the lecturers in the School said: β€œIt was a great atmosphere. Students excitedly talking about their individual project work, with academics and fellow students asking questions, and companies discussing their job offers.  It was great to see so many first- and second-years eagerly discussing the work on display and picking up ideas for their own projects.”

Dr Mohammed Mabrook, Senior Tutor for the School, said: β€œIt was a great event to celebrate students’ success. Expo day, as always, is one of the main activities that students enjoy during their time in ΒιΆΉΝψ. The atmosphere was excellent, and students enjoyed talking about their projects. Many thanks to the organisers and to all the students who helped make the event a huge success.”

Several awards were presented, acknowledging the hard work that the students had put into their posters.

  • Azhar Khalil, studying the BSc Computer Information Systems programme, won the prize for the Academically Best Poster in the Computer Science discipline, as voted for by the academic staff of the School.
  • Renjie Yu was presented the prize for the Academically Best Poster in the Electronic Engineering discipline, again judged by the academics.
  • Yannick Atuhaire Matinez, soon to graduate from the BSc Computer Science programme, won the Most Appealing Poster award, as judged by Lois Shaw – Business Support Officer at M-Sparc.
  • Gareth Parry-Jones won the Best Poster prize, awarded by Sian Shepherd. The School thanks S2 for sponsoring the prize and we’re sure that Gareth will enjoy the chocolate Easter egg!

It was clear that students had worked hard on their posters and presentations. Azhar Khalil said β€œI am extremely proud to be part of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Many academics - especially Panagiotis Ritsos, Cameron Gray, and Ik Soo Lim - have encouraged and motivated me to excel beyond my own expectations.” Yannick Atuhaire Martinez mentioned β€œthe Expo was a great opportunity to showcase the efforts we had been putting into our dissertation projects. It was great to see the diversity of the projects on the day, and the different ways students presented their posters”.

Finally, Gareth Parry-Jones, on the BSc Computer Information Systems programme, commented β€œThe Expo was a great opportunity to see what my fellow course mates have been working on throughout the year, and to engage with local businesses about possible employment after graduating. Winning the award demonstrates to me that all the effort I've put towards my project has been worth it!”
