Students from ΒιΆΉΝψ have planted hundreds of trees as part of an exciting wildlife project with a tourism business in Snowdonia.
The group, from the ΒιΆΉΝψ Forestry Studentsβ Association (BFSA), hope the new trees will improve the landscape of the world-famous Ogwen Valley, near Bethesda.
Organised by Neil Martinson, from the Snowdonia Mountain Hostel, over 400 native tree species were planted by the ΒιΆΉΝψ volunteers.
Explaining the importance of the work, Mr Martinson said: βWe sourced the trees from the Woodland Trust as they are special βpioneer speciesβ which encourage other trees to grow.
βThere are loads of advantages to having more trees in this valley so, with the help of ΒιΆΉΝψ, we really hope weβve kick-started this process.β
βWe planted goat willow, holly, crab apple, hazel and birch; all indigenous species designed to withstand the brutal wind and rain we often experience here in Snowdonia β and which the students coped with wonderfully during the tree planting!β Mr Martinson added.
Tree planting in the Ogwen ValleyDr James Walmsley, course director for forestry degrees at ΒιΆΉΝψ said: βOur students learn about all about the planting of trees and forests; so itβs fantastic they get the opportunity to put this knowledge into practise.
βItβs also great that forestry students are able to volunteer and put something back into the local community which will benefit future generations.β
Forestry student and vice-president of BFSA, Chris Andrews, praised the Snowdonia Mountain Hostel and the universityβs lecturers for helping organise the event.
βWeβre so lucky to be studying in such a fantastic location where we get to go out and be involved in reforestation projects like this.
βAnd of course the home-made lasagne at the hostel went down exceptionally well after a hard day of tree planting!β Mr Andrews added.
