To understand the world, you need to understand language. From ancient manuscripts to modern computational models, from how babies learn to speak to the impact of language on society, Linguistics covers the whole human experience.

You will learn to work with data, investigate many different linguistic phenomena and acquire skills in critical thinking that will make you valuable to employers in diverse fields. We have cutting-edge tech to research language, e.g. eye-tracking devices and professional audio equipment.

Linguistics is a tight-knit group of staff and students where you can get to know everyone. Smaller class sizes set Â鶹Íø apart, allowing for more meaningful interaction with your lecturers and for continuous personal support. Students also run the Â鶹Íø Linguistics Society, which organises events throughout the year.

Our university is in the most bilingual part of the UK, so you’ll be joining a community where bilingualism is thriving. Furthermore, all lecturers in Linguistics speak more than one language. This means that you will be able to experience the reality of multilingualism and the way in which different languages shape society.

After learning about the foundations of linguistics, you’ll be able to specialise. You will also complete a dissertation project on a topic you choose, which you will work one-to-one with a lecturer to develop. You can also tailor your course to include studying abroad and/or undertaking work placement, to broaden your horizons and prepare you for life after graduation.
