Why do second language speakers often have a noticeable accent? Can adults ever sound fully native in a second language, and does it matter? This session explores how and why accents emerge when we learn new languages, what makes some speech sounds harder than others, and how listeners often judge speakers based on their pronunciation. We’ll also examine what linguistics can reveal about these issues, drawing on areas such as phonetics and phonology, second language acquisition, and sociolinguistics. By the end, you’ll have a new understanding of how language learning works- and how studying it can change the way we think about accent.
