Overview

This module will introduce the important areas of therapeutics in a wide range of specialties using a systems approach as applied in the teaching of basic medical sciences.

The module will cover interventions for conditions listed in the PA curriculum. Prescribing practice will be included, together with discussion regarding the role of the PA in prescribing under supervision. The learning of therapeutics and pharmacology will be integrated with other related modules to facilitate understanding of the indications for interventions, risks, complications and benefit, and will emphasise the importance of multi-disciplinary approach to working and patient care.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -Category C (50% -59%)A threshold student should have thorough knowledge of the essential facts around therapeutics and pharmacology. -good -Category B (60%-69%)A good student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate. -excellent -Category A (70% - 100%):An excellent student should have a thorough factual knowledge across all aspects of the module, and be able to detail examples where appropriate, supported by additional reading and knowledge drawn from other modules. For the higher 'A' marks, significant demonstration of critical analysis and wider reading is essential.

• Be very familiar with evidence related to prescribing medications, guidelines and issues surrounding safe prescribing and their role and supervision in the team.

• Describe the fundamental role of pharmacology in clinical practice.

• Develop an detailed understanding of the appropriate use of therapies.

• Investigate how therapeutic interventions relate to disease prevention, diagnoses and management plans.
